On August 26, a fisherman gave a signal to the Hunting reserve “Studen Kladenets” about a drowning Griffon vulture in the Studen Kladenets Dam in the Eastern Rhodopes, Bulgaria. The Hunting reserve contacted a team of the LIFE project of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) "Egyptian Vulture New LIFE". The team was monitoring the species' nests near the area and responded immediately. From the hunting, reserve provided a boat and the search began. After about half an hour of inspecting the area, the bird was found and taken out of the cold waters of the dam.

The BSPB team assessed that condition of the vulture required medical intervention and immediately transported the bird to the Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Center in Stara Zagora. After examining the vulture, the Center's team found that there was a fracture of the right-wing and a possible problem with the nervous system. The Griffon vulture is currently in good general condition and feeds on its own.

We are very grateful to Dobrin Karchev, who gave the signal for the distressed bird, and to Anton Krastev from Hunting reserve “Studen Kladenets” for providing the boat. The case proved the importance of the joint efforts of many parties to achieve a good result, and in this case - to save the life of a rare species.
