The first maps from Bulgaria of the European Breeding Bird Atlas are ready

The data provision for the second edition of the European Breeding Bird Atlas is in its final stage. This is one of the largest initiatives to map the biodiversity of the Old Continent and covers around 600 species of birds in over 50 countries. The Atlas will present maps of the species distribution, based on data gathered over the period 2012-2018. The aim is each country to provide as much info as possible about breeding bird species in each 50x50km2 of its territory.

All data collected up to now for Bulgaria is summarized and uploaded to the online platform of the EBBA2, which you can see at the following link:

The platform allows you to select a species from the drop-down menu and view on the map its distribution in the country based on 50x50km2. From the second drop-down menu named EBBA2 pilot, you can choose whether to visualize the occurrence, the abundance or the breeding status of the species. The key is in the bottom right corner of the screen.

The maps are based on over 607,000 individual bird observations. Data is provided by BSPB, EEA, the National Museum of Natural History at BAS, Green Balkans, the Wild Flora and Fauna Fund, the Predatory Birds Protection Society, as well as many birdwatchers and professional ornithologists from Bulgaria and abroad.

We need your help too to complete the species lists for the squares in Bulgaria!

For some squares, species lists are not yet fully comprehensive. There may be other species in these squares for which there are no observations yet in the database. In the attached file named "species", you will find a list of priority search species for each square. To see the list, click on a square of the map that you are interested in. Marked as   search priorities are some species that are likely to be encountered in the square, but for which we do not have any newer data.

If you have observations of nesting during the breeding season in the years 2012-2018 of some of the species we are looking for, or for other birds that are not presented in a certain square, you can provide such information for the Atlas by the free application SmartBirdsPro (preferably) or by filling this form.

All data provided will be used only for the purposes of the European Breeding Bird Atlas!

Thank you in advance for the information provided!

Advices when filling in electronic form:

  • Only fields marked with * are mandatory. These are the “Observer”, “Species”, “Square”, “Year”, “Month”, and “Probability of nesting”
  • Geographic coordinates of the observation can be found by pointing  in Google Maps or Google Earth
  • If you provide data with exact geographic coordinates, they should be decimals
