New environmentally friendly forestry practice in the Strandzha forests


In the period 18-20 of August was performed an inspection for implementation of the activities under a contract for applying of environmentally friendly production of high quality wood according Saarland method on the territory of state forestry – Kosti and Malko Tarnovo and state forestry – Gramatikovo.


Representatives of the Executive Forest Agency, Northeastern and Southeastern State-owned enterprises were joined by the manager of the company B&B Partners, engineer Martin Borisov. There were also directors of the forestry’s on whose territories the contact is being implemented.   


On the field, that is part of the environmentally friendly production of high quality wood, have been done inspection. The fields work on a large part of the planned plantations was finished form 80 to 100% in different places.


The long-term goal on the innovative forestry practice – the Saarland method is to grow high quality timber in accordance with high environmental standards. It applies for balance between the production and protection functions of forests and gives an individual approach to care for each tree.


The forests of Strandzha Mountain on which the innovative forestry practice is applied are composed from deciduous species – mainly beech tree and oak. Another positive effect on felling carried out in accordance with the Saarland method is the reduction of disturbance among forest animal species, and this allows for the successful reproduction and care of the young’s of the lesser spotted eagle, and in the future to improve its habitats.


The applying of the Saarland method is an activity of the project “Measures for protection lesser spotted eagle and its habitats in Bulgaria” to the LIFE program in the EU.
