Nature monument "Kovan kaya" include magnificent cliff complex on the north bank of Arda river. It holds significant number of petrophylic bird species, such as Blue Rock Trush (Monticola solitaris), Western Rock Nuthacth (Sitta neumayer), Crag Martin (Ptyonoprogne rupestris), Red-rumped Swallow (Hirundo daurica), Alpine Swift (Apus melba), Rock Bunting (Emberiza cia) etc. Here breed the endangered Egyptian vulture (Neophro percnopterus) and 30% of the Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population in Bulgaria. It is also important breeding place for the Black stork (Ciconia nigra) and the Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus). Kovan kaya also is home for Red Data Book species, such as European Glass Lizard (Ophisaurus apodus), Spur-tighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca), Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni), Sand Boa (Eryx jaculus). In 2002 in cliff niche was found one of the very few localities of the rare for Bulgaria Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida teniotis).
