Eastern Rhodopes welcome this year’s first griffon vulture chick


This year vulture experts and the rewilding team in the Rhodope Mountains counted 75 griffon vulture pairs within the regular monitoring programme of this only indigenous griffon vulture population in Bulgaria. In mid-February 2016, experts from the  Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds  (BSPB) visited all griffon vulture nesting sites in the eastern part of the Rhodopes Mountains. The monitoring results showed that 35 pairs are occupying Madzharovo and 42 pairs Studen Kladenets sites, both priority areas in our initiative. From 75 registered...



The website of the Rewilding Europe offers “Touch the Rhodopes” with BSPB and LivingNature


The pan-European initiative Rewilding Europe included on its site a special section dedicated to the Rhodope Mountains, which has recently become its newest member on a proposal from BSPB . It focuses on the uniqueness of the nature and the biodiversity of the area and promotes ecotourism opportunities. The aim is to attract more visitors in the Rhodopes and thus to contribute to the sustainable development of the local economy. Particular attention is paid to the key species of interest for tourists: Griffon and Egyptian vulture , Imperial Eagle, Levant...
