The Lesser Spotted Eagle Ilia, who were tagged with a GPS transmitter by the experts from the BSPB in August, flies over Tanzania during the last few days. The young bird started its migration to Africa on 13th of September and has already crossed the borders of 12 countries last of which are Democrate Republic of the Congo, Uganda and Burundi. A month ago Ilia stayed for a few days on the border between Sudan and Chad and it seemed that he has found its wintering place, but its brave Bulgarian heart urged him to continue its journey south of the Equator.
Ilia was born this year in the news near Alexandria village, municipality of Krushari. Our colleague Mihail Iliev named him after the Saint Ilia who is now the protector of the bird. One of the biggest Christian saints flies through the sky in the fiery chariot, and his feathered namesake travels around the world with the transmitter which signal you can follow on the project website.
The transmitter of the Lesser Spotted Eagle is part of the activities within the LIFE project Life for Eagle’s Habitats. Its goal is to create new habitats for the Lesser Spotted Eagle, and to protect the species as a part of the Bulgarian biodiversity.
