It aimed at gathering information about the number and distribution of the endangered species <em>Pelecanus crispus <\/em>(Dalmatian pelican) and <em>Pelecanus onocrotalus<\/em> (Great white pelican) in the region. The event was organized within the project \u201cPelican Way of LIFE\u201d and was coordinated by the Hellenic ornithological society (HOS).<\/p>\n<p>Teams from Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds (BSPB) also participated in the international initiative. They visited the wetlands that are of greatest importance to the two pelican species in Bulgaria \u2013 Srebarna Lake, Persin Island, protected area \u201cKalimok-Brashlen\u201d, Burgas Lakes, the dams Ovcharitsa and Rozov Kladenets, Varna lake, the island near Gorni Tsibar, and others.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13079\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13079\" class=\"wp-image-13079 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bspb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Rozovi-pelikani-2-Zornitsa-Petkova-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Great white pelicans, \u00a9 Zornitsa Petkova\" width=\"615\" height=\"461\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 615px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 615\/461;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great white pelicans, \u00a9 Zornitsa Petkova<\/p><\/div>\n<p>513 Dalmatian and 575 Great white pelicans in total were counted in Bulgaria. The greatest number of Dalmatian pelicans were observed in the swamps on Persin Island \u2013 176 birds, Studen Kladenets dam \u2013 118 birds, and Lake Srebarna \u2013 70 birds.\u00a0 The greatest number of Great white pelicans were observed in Rozov Kladenets dam \u2013 211, Burgas Lake \u2013 100, and in the area of the mouth of Fakiiska River \u2013 85 birds. During the Census special attention was paid to the four nesting colonies of Dalmatian pelicans in Bulgaria \u2013 Srebarna Lake, Peschina swamp, Dead Marsh, and protected area \u201cKalimok-Brashlen\u201d.
