It is also the time of year when high temperatures, prolonged drought, and strong winds can turn a single spark into a major threat to people, wildlife, and farmland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The risk of wildfires is currently extremely high across Bulgaria. Authorities have increased controls to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations during the harvest season, the maintenance of permanent grasslands, and the ban on burning waste, dry vegetation, and crop residues. Violations are subject to serious administrative penalties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Every one of us can help prevent wildfires. It is important to:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>Avoid lighting fires outside designated areas.<\/li>\n<li>Never discard cigarette butts unless they are completely extinguished.<\/li>\n<li>Never burn dry vegetation, stubble, or waste.<\/li>\n<li>Follow all fire safety requirements when operating agricultural machinery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">If you notice smoke or fire, report it immediately by calling <strong>112<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Wildfires have devastating consequences not only for people but also for wildlife and their habitats. In recent years, forest fires have burned tens of thousands of hectares across Europe, forcing thousands of people to leave their homes and destroying valuable natural habitats. Bulgaria has not been spared. At present, severe wildfires are affecting Spain and France, causing fatalities and extensive damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Preventing wildfires is not only about responding to emergencies. Healthy ecosystems are one of our best natural defences against the spread of fire. Wetlands and peatlands retain water and can slow the advance of flames even during prolonged droughts. Old-growth and naturally mixed forests are generally more resilient to fire than uniform plantations. Species-rich grasslands retain more moisture in the soil, while close-to-nature forest management and natural grazing reduce the build-up of dry vegetation that acts as fuel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Conserving nature is therefore not only about protecting biodiversity\u2014it is also an investment in public safety and in building resilience to increasingly frequent and severe climate extremes.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, let us all act responsibly.
