These will allow experts to track their movements in real time \u2013 where they feed and rest, which areas they use and how they gradually adapt to their new environment. They were provided by the Spanish conservation organisation GREFA (Grupo de Rehabilitaci\u00f3n de la Fauna Aut\u00f3ctona) and placed in a specially built adaptation aviary in the Eastern Rhodopes. Just three years after the start of the reintroduction programme, in 2026, eight pairs of Cinereous Vultures were recorded in the Bulgarian part of the Eastern Rhodopes. Three of these pairs successfully hatched chicks \u2013 the first confirmed breeding of the species in the area in more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37295\" style=\"width: 774px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37295\" class=\"wp-image-37295 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bspb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/9-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"509\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 764px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 764\/509;\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-37295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo: \u00a9 Iordanka Goranova\/BSPB<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>A total of 40 Cinereous Vultures have now been released<\/strong> as part of the species restoration programme. The main goal is to establish a sustainable breeding population in the Bulgarian part of the Rhodopes, which will contribute to the recovery of the species across the Balkans and strengthen the only natural colony of Cinereous Vultures in the region \u2013 the one in Dadia National Park in Greece.<\/p>\n<p>The Cinereous Vulture is the largest vulture species in Europe and one of the rarest bird species in the Balkans. The species was once widespread in Bulgaria but disappeared as a breeding species at the end of the 20th century.
