In just 10 days, the #HandsOffNature campaign received 196,118 messages from European citizens calling on the European Commission to stop any rollback of EU nature laws.
At the end of July, the European Commission launched a consultation with citizens, companies, and organizations in the EU on the idea of reducing the administrative burden within environmental legislation. This proposal is part of an ongoing wave of “simplification” aimed at reducing red tape for businesses with supposedly faster decisions, fewer obstacles, and clearer rules. The danger is that behind this explanation lies the possibility that much-needed environmental safeguards will be removed and more power given to industries that harm nature.
The European Commission is expected to review the comments received and come up with a proposal for a decision by the end of 2025.
