Our partners from Wines of Sakar have been recognised for responsible business at the Annual Biodiversity and Climate Awards, presented by the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation!

The Birds of Sakar wine line, developed in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), received the Audience Award in its category, which included eight other nominations.

The award is presented to businesses that not only avoid having a negative impact on nature, but whose activities actively contribute to the conservation or restoration of specific species and habitats.

Birds of Sakar is a wine line that brings together BSPB and Wines of Sakar around a shared cause – the conservation of wild birds in the Sakar region. The initiative began in 2013 with a partnership between Bratanov Winery and BSPB in support of the Eastern Imperial Eagle, with a share of the wine sales financing conservation measures.

Today, the initiative includes nine wineries (Bratanov, Zaara Estate, Rosalea, Kolarovo Winery, Terra Tangra, Villa Bassarea, Little Star, Bisante and Ivo Varbanov), with each wine in the series featuring a species emblematic of the region. Through sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices – organic vineyards, reduced use of pesticides and the preservation of natural habitats – Birds of Sakar demonstrates how wine culture can support biodiversity and the traditional landscape of the Sakar region.
