An adult Cinereous vulture died after colliding with a wind turbine in the Greek part of the Rhodope Mountains. The incident was reported by ANIMA, whose veterinarians did everything possible to save the bird’s life, but unfortunately the injuries were extremely severe.
The bird was found by the wind farm staff and handed over to NECCA. The braking/stopping system in use failed to prevent the incident. We are in contact with our Greek colleagues and will inform you when we receive more information about the case.

This is another case showing that poorly planned wind farms are a threat to soaring birds. We remind you that two weeks ago, following strong public reaction and expert opinions from BSPB and other organizations, the RIEW Haskovo rejected the EIA report for a wind farm planned in the “Krumovitsa” protected area precisely because of the threat it poses to black, griffon, and Egyptian vultures.
