The Year of the White Stork

The White Stork. We search for it in the sky, along rivers, in fields by the road, in the familiar nest. Every meeting with him is a pure delight. Like a hug from an old friend from childhood.

2024 is its year, filled with exciting events in which you can be the main character! This summer will feature:

  • VIII International White Stork Census organized every 10 years in over 40 countries worldwide. This year marks the eighth edition, taking place in June and July, covering more than 5000 locations. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) is the coordinating organization for Bulgaria. We will count adult birds and their young. Everyone can participate by recording observations in the SmartBirds mobile application.

  • Simultaneously, we will continue to monitor the nests of White Stork families in the villages of Yarlovo and Dragushinovo.
  • We will attach transmitters to birds from the Bulgarian population of the species to study migration.
  • Together with our partners, we will discover and raise at-risk stork nests on platforms.
  • We will map the locations where White Storks gather during migration to identify and conserve them.

Support our research and conservation activities by donating to:

  • The organization of the Bulgarian population census of the White Stork within the European Census
  • Maintenance of the database of White Stork nests
  • The long-term broadcasting of cameras on White Stork nests in the villages of Yarlovo and Dragushinovo
  • Purchase of a new live observation camera for a fourth nest of the species
  • Purchase of transmitters for studying the migration of the species from Bulgaria
  • Purchase of pastures in Southeast Bulgaria, important for the species during the breeding season and migration
  • Mapping of locations where White Storks gather during migration to identify and conserve them
