With the arrival of spring, EDN North is continuing its work on the project “Safe Sky for Birds in North-Eastern Bulgaria”, funded by the EU LIFE Programme and implemented in partnership with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds.

The project is now in its third consecutive year, with activities carried out under suitable weather conditions. Its main objective is to reduce risks to threatened bird species by making the electricity distribution network safer.

Installation of bird protection devices has recently been carried out along overhead power lines in the areas of Pisarevo, Blatnitsa and Rositsa in the Veliko Tarnovo region. Along the Pisarevo power line, 28 poles were retrofitted with a total of 28 sets of bird protection devices. On the Vira and Polyana overhead lines, 3 poles were equipped with a total of 6 sets of such devices.

These devices are specialised insulation elements installed on electrical infrastructure to prevent electrocution and injury to birds when perching near live components. At the same time, they also reduce the risk of faults in the electricity distribution network. Their use contributes both to biodiversity protection and to more reliable electricity supply.

Project activities will continue in the coming months as part of the company’s long-term efforts to conserve biodiversity and reduce bird-related incidents on electricity infrastructure.
